Child-focused domestic and family violence support: meeting with Minister Harrison

This week I had the privilege of meeting with Minister Jodie Harrison, the NSW Minister for Women and the Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. Our conversation focused on what happens when children disclose domestic and family violence and how communities can better support them.

Adults in child-facing and adjacent roles are often exposed to both direct and indirect disclosures of violence. When talking about domestic and family violence, they can sometimes shy away because the stakes are so high and no one wants to make a mistake. That is why it is so important to have practical resources that support these conversations and give communities the tools and confidence to respond safely.

I highlighted the need for more child-focused resources that reflect children’s diverse experiences and genuinely connect with them, rather than relying on prescriptive fact sheets or questionnaires. Resources like Why Elle Spoke Up could complement tools such as the Common Approach to Risk Assessment and Safety, providing a way for adults to engage meaningfully with children when disclosures occur.

A whole-of-community approach is essential in the prevention and intervention of domestic and family violence. Children interact with many safe adults who can provide support, ensure their experiences are heard, and help connect them to ongoing care. Strengthening these supports helps children feel understood and increases the likelihood that disclosures lead to appropriate and protective responses.
